Hello Nzinga,
I have done some research for you and it
seems that your name originally means
"Queen". Here are the links that led me to
believe this:
The first is:
www.dollstreetdreamers.com/31gazette.htm
(it would be under "Making African-
American Dolls")
The next is:
www.ascac.org/president.html
(as you may notice that queen is capitalized
as it is given a discreet definition of Nzinga)
I would say that the basic meaning of your
name is "Queen" most definiately because
of its use for women in charge.

Hello all!
Thanks for your replies and comments.
Unfortunately, I'm still searching... I've come across many sites that tell me Nzinga means Queen, but they seem to come to that conclusion based solely on the fact that there was a Queen named Nzinga. The only other definition that I've come across is "from the river" (www.swagga.com).
I was hoping someone with knowledge of the languages of Angola would be able to help me on this issue. I would like to know from what language the name Nzinga originates, and it's meaning in that tongue.
Also my last name is Jones, maiden name is Adams, and there are definately not a lot of cajun girls with this name! :)
In fact, I've never met another Nzinga, though I have met people who've known another Nzinga...
Thanks Again!

You are named after the Queen from Angola who fought against Portuguese rulers and kept them away from the country until they finally defeated her and started the slave trade all over the world. You can look her up.

Sorry,
I was in a rush and did not completely read your post. You already know the origins of the name. I’m not sure it means queen in any of the African languages in Angola (ut it is always associated with the warrior queen). To your point- in Somalia it does mean from the river. Some of the people in Angola descended from Eastern Africa (Ethiopia Somalia area) many many many years ago. It is possible that the name kept its meaning. I am from Angola and I will ask some of the elders if they know the meaning of Nzinga.

ar2000us: Thanks a bunch!
You are exactly what I was looking for... someone from Angola with the knowledge or connections to find out exactly what my name means!
By the way what language is the definition "from the river" from? Is it Somalian or something else?
Thank You !!!VERY!!! much for your help!
Everybody, thank you for all your input.

NZinga does mean of the river in Swahili I've been told. I too have the name N'Zinga but it means beautiful. My parents ordered a book of names from Ebony magazine or Essence back in the 70's and the meaning was in the book. It has different meanings in different regions of the continent. I think both meanings are reciprocal. Beautiful like a Queen and strong like a leader (of the river).
Hope this helps
